Commissioned by the Art Gallery of New South Wales for the second iteration of the biennial exhibition The National: New Australian Art, The Ongoing Remains (3 parts) included sculptural, moving image and still photographic elements that formed a cohesive distributed installation, that populated four spaces across two levels.
Part 1 - The Emissaries: Keepers of our Stories, comprised 26 intentionally misaligned, unique state casts based on the 15th century portrait bust of Niccolò da Uzzano attributed to Italian Renaissance master Donatello, installed at the gallery’s entrance.
Part 2 - Wit(h)ness: A Haunting, a 59.19 min single channel HD video depicts an edition of the casts being mechnaically erased. It was installed with the 19th century sculpture callection.
Part 3 -, Continuum: The Persistence of Being, a triptych of portraits of the residues of the erasure process, was installed on the level below where it was experienced as the final work in the exhibition.
Configured this way The Ongoing Remains was experienced by visitors to the exhibition as the first and the final work.
